Save the date cards

Your save the date is the first thing guests will hold from your wedding, so make it look like the day you’re planning. Choose a photo card, a postcard, a photo-booth strip, or the opening piece of one of our matching wedding suites: blue hydrangea, château estate, autumn dahlia, citrus riviera, rose ribbon, merlot doodles, modern editorial or Midnight deco.

Each suite carries on with the invitation, evening invitation, RSVP card, menu, seating plan, table numbers and thank-you cards in the same design, so you can come back for each piece when you need it. There’s a Christmas party save the date and a graduation ticket too.

Your first design is free with an account. After that it’s 99p a design, or £5 a month for every design. A ready-made Canva invitation template on Etsy is usually £6 to £10. See how we compare

What to put on a save the date

  • Your names, the date and the town or venue. That’s all it needs: times, the dress code and the gift list belong on the invitation.
  • “Formal invitation to follow”, so nobody books a room before they have the details.
  • Your wedding website, if you have one, for hotels and travel.
  • For a wedding abroad, the country and any welcome drinks the night before, so guests can book leave and flights.
  • Write each guest’s name on the envelope, so it’s clear whether children and plus-ones are invited.

Questions about save the date cards

When should you send save the dates?
Six to twelve months before the wedding is usual in the UK. Go for the earlier end for a wedding abroad, in August or over a bank holiday weekend, when guests have leave and travel to book.
Do save the dates have to match the wedding invitations?
No, but it’s easy when they do. Most of the save the dates here start a matching wedding suite, so the invitation, RSVP card and signs that follow look the same, and a whole suite opens in the editor at once, one tab per piece.
What size is a save the date?
Most are 5 × 7 inches, the size of an invitation, and the postcards are 6 × 4 inches, which goes through the post as a standard letter. Each comes with an A4 sheet to print at home and cut out.
