Will you be my godparent? Proposal cards

Asking someone to be a godparent is one of the loveliest questions you’ll ever ask a friend, so let your baby ask it. Choose a tiny hand reaching up under a photo, a bunny with a posy for a godmother, bears on a hilltop for a godfather, a wreath around a photo for asking two at once, or a gift-box card with boxes to tick: “yes”, “absolutely” or “of course!”.

Once they’ve said yes, there’s a photo thank-you card for the day and an A4 keepsake of the promises they make. Print it to hand over with a little gift, or send the image to a godparent who lives far away.

How to ask someone to be a godparent

  • Ask in person if you can: tuck the card into a small gift box and watch them open it.
  • Write it from the baby, “Will you be my godmother?”, signed with their name and a kiss.
  • Add the date of the christening if it’s booked, so they can save it straight away.
  • Ask two or three months before the service, so they can plan travel and your church can meet them if it wants to.
  • In the Church of England a child usually has at least three godparents: two of the same sex as the child and one of the other. Other churches have their own customs, so check with yours.

Questions about godparent proposal cards

What do you write in a godparent proposal card?
Keep it short and let the baby do the asking: “I’m going to need someone to look up to. Will you be my godfather?” Add your baby’s name, the date of the service if you have it, and a line from you on the back.
Can I use these for a naming day or a guide parent?
Yes. Every word is editable, so “godparent” can become “guide parent”, “oddparent” or anything you like, and the cards work just as well for a naming day as for a christening.
Is there a card for asking two godparents at once?
The wren wreath card is written for asking two people together, with your baby’s photo in the middle. The others work for two with a small change to the wording.
